OBD-II fault code

P0920: Gear Shift Forward Actuator Circuit/Open

What it means

Open circuit at the forward shift actuator that engages forward gears on automated manual or dual-clutch transmissions.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

On an automated manual or dual-clutch transmission, the forward shift actuator moves the mechanism that selects forward gears. The transmission control module sets this code when it detects an open electrical path in the forward actuator circuit, so it cannot reliably command forward engagement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator open winding
  2. Wiring break
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live transmission status while requesting a forward gear, noting whether the module detects actuator command but no engagement.
  2. Inspect the forward actuator connector for a pushed-back pin, loose fit, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
  3. Check the forward actuator harness for breaks or chafing, and move it gently while monitoring the circuit for an intermittent open.
  4. Measure continuity through the forward actuator circuit and actuator winding using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the circuit and winding pass, verify the module's command and output according to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reseat a backed-out pin or secure a loose forward actuator connector.
  • Repair a break or damaged section in the forward actuator wiring.
  • Replace the forward actuator if its winding is open.
  • Repair the control module circuit only if testing confirms it is not driving the actuator.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on the vehicle until forward engagement is dependable; it may delay or fail to move when selected. If it cannot engage a gear or begins slipping, stop in a safe place and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
