What it means
The gear shift forward actuator circuit reports a range/performance fault. Forward gear engagement is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The forward shift actuator moves the transmission mechanism into forward gears, and its control system checks whether the commanded movement is plausible. This code sets when the actuator circuit or response is outside its expected range or performance, even if the circuit is not fully open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator fault
- Wiring fault
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded forward gear with live actuator position or status to identify when the response falls out of range.
- Inspect the forward actuator, linkage, connector, and wiring for damage, loose connections, or signs the actuator cannot move freely.
- Monitor actuator command and response during a forward gear request, following the vehicle's safe test procedure.
- Check the actuator circuit for continuity, shorts, and unstable connections using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit is sound, test actuator movement and feedback for wear or calibration drift using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair a loose or damaged forward actuator connection.
- Repair chafed or broken wiring in the forward actuator circuit.
- Replace a worn or faulty forward shift actuator if its response is outside specification.
- Carry out the manufacturer-prescribed adjustment or calibration if testing identifies a calibration issue.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving because forward shifts may be delayed or missed and the transmission may enter limp mode. Stop if it slips, shudders strongly, or cannot engage a gear, since continued operation can worsen transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
