What it means
The TCM detects that the gate select actuator does not reach the commanded position within tolerance. Mechanical bind, weak actuator, or sensor offset.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gate select actuator moves the transmission selector between shift gates, while position feedback lets the TCM verify the movement. This code sets when the actuator does not reach the commanded gate within the allowed tolerance, which can point to a binding mechanism, weak actuator, or misaligned position feedback.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Selector mechanism binding
- Actuator force degraded
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual gate positions in live data to see where movement falls short.
- Inspect the selector linkage and gate mechanism for obstruction, damage, or signs of binding.
- Check the actuator connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, or damage that could reduce actuator force.
- Use the manufacturer's scan-tool procedure to command gate movement and observe whether the actuator responds slowly or stops short.
- If the mechanism moves freely and its wiring is sound, test actuator force and position feedback against the manufacturer's specification, then correct a weak actuator or sensor offset.
Common fixes
- Remove an obstruction and repair or adjust a binding selector mechanism.
- Repair loose, corroded, or damaged actuator wiring and connections.
- Correct gate-position sensor alignment if testing confirms an offset.
- Replace the gate select actuator if it cannot move the mechanism adequately.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the selector misses gates, shifts harshly, or leaves the transmission in one gear; have the vehicle recovered if gear selection is unreliable. Repeated forced or incomplete gate changes can worsen actuator or transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
