OBD-II fault code

P0994: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch F Circuit Low

What it means

The control module detects a low electrical level in the transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch F circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch F sends pressure information to the control module for transmission control. P0994 sets when the F circuit signal is lower than expected, which can point to a signal wire shorted to ground, an internally shorted sensor, or a poor connector connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and check pressure sensor/switch F live data to see whether its signal stays unusually low and when the fault occurs.
  2. Inspect the F sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, fluid intrusion, and insulation rubbed through against ground.
  3. Using the wiring diagram, check the F circuit reference supply and ground, then test the signal wire for a short to ground with the sensor isolated as specified by the manufacturer.
  4. Measure the F sensor output under the specified conditions and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass but the signal remains low, test or replace pressure sensor/switch F before investigating the control module.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose F sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or damaged harness insulation.
  • Replace pressure sensor/switch F if its output is internally shorted or outside specification.
  • Repair a verified control-module circuit fault if the sensor and wiring pass testing.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid towing or hard acceleration if the transmission is shifting harshly, slipping, or entering limp mode. Continued driving with unreliable pressure feedback can worsen wear; stop if the vehicle loses drive or shifts unpredictably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
