OBD-II fault code

P0841: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

TCM detects rationality fault between fluid pressure sensor A signal and commanded line pressure during defined operating conditions.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Transmission pressure sensor or switch A reports hydraulic pressure to the control module, which compares the signal with expected pressure during defined operating conditions. P0841 sets when the A signal is electrically plausible but does not respond as expected relative to commanded line pressure, so the cause may be sensor drift, low fluid, or a hydraulic pressure problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed
  2. Low ATF level
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light may be on
  • Shifting may be abnormal

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare pressure sensor A live data with commanded line pressure to identify the conditions under which the readings diverge.
  2. Check the fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure, and look for leaks or signs of aeration that could affect actual pressure.
  3. Inspect sensor A’s connector and harness for poor contact, corrosion, or damage that could distort its signal.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test sensor A’s supply, ground, and signal circuits, then compare the signal with the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the circuit tests correctly, have actual hydraulic pressure checked under the specified conditions to distinguish sensor drift from a pressure or internal leak problem.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid and repair any leak using the vehicle’s specified fluid and procedure.
  • Reconnect sensor A’s connector or repair damaged wiring and terminals.
  • Replace sensor A if its output is outside the manufacturer’s specification while the circuit and actual pressure are correct.
  • Repair a confirmed internal hydraulic leak or pressure-control fault.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting remains normal, limit driving to a short, gentle trip for diagnosis; avoid towing and heavy acceleration. Stop if the transmission slips, shifts harshly, or loses drive, since incorrect pressure can damage clutches and other internal parts.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
