What it means
The clutch position sensor circuit signal is above the expected level. The code does not identify the specific electrical cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Clutch position sensor A sends a signal used by the transmission control module to track clutch position. P0808 sets when the signal rises above the expected level, which can happen if the signal is shorted to a voltage source or the circuit otherwise reads too high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to reference voltage
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Scan the transmission module and save freeze-frame data, including sensor A’s reported position and any related circuit codes.
- Check live data for a signal that stays high or fails to follow clutch movement, if available.
- Inspect sensor A’s wiring for pinched sections touching a power source and check the connector for corrosion or poor pin fit.
- Test the signal wire for a short to reference voltage or battery power, and verify the sensor supply and ground against the wiring diagram.
- If the circuit checks out, test sensor A and the module input against the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a pinched or damaged wire contacting a voltage source.
- Clean and secure the sensor A connector or repair poor terminal fit.
- Repair a short to reference voltage or battery power in the harness.
- Replace clutch position sensor A if it fails testing.
- Repair a confirmed module input fault.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the transmission slips, shifts harshly, or struggles to engage, since a high clutch position signal can disrupt clutch control. If shifting remains normal, keep driving to a minimum until the circuit is diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
