What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the clutch position sensor b circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch position sensor B reports clutch position to the transmission or engine control module so it can coordinate shift operation. The module compares the sensor's signal with the expected range as the clutch moves; it sets P087B when that signal is plausible in level but does not track position as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check live data for clutch position sensor B while operating the clutch, looking for a reading that changes smoothly but fails to match clutch movement.
- Inspect sensor B's mounting and linkage for displacement, looseness, or damage that could shift its operating position.
- Check the sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or poor seating that could distort the signal.
- Compare sensor B's output across the clutch travel with the manufacturer's specification and, if available, compare it with the other clutch position signal.
- If mounting and wiring are sound, test sensor B through its operating range and replace it if its output falls outside the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Seat and secure the sensor B connector.
- Correct sensor B mounting or linkage alignment.
- Repair damaged or corroded wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace clutch position sensor B if its output has drifted outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as far as needed to reach a safe place or repair facility, and avoid heavy traffic, towing, and hard acceleration. Unreliable clutch-position data can cause missed or harsh shifts, and limp mode may limit vehicle speed or gear choice.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
