What it means
The clutch position sensor circuit signal is intermittent. The code does not identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Clutch position sensor A reports clutch position to the transmission control module. P0809 sets when the sensor’s circuit signal drops out or changes unpredictably rather than remaining reliable, often because of an intermittent connection or wiring fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Scan the transmission module and save freeze-frame data and related codes before clearing the fault.
- Watch sensor A’s live position data while operating the clutch through its range, if the vehicle can be checked safely.
- Inspect the sensor A connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or contact with a vibrating component.
- Check connector pin tension and test the wiring for intermittent continuity while gently moving the harness.
- If the wiring remains stable, test sensor A and the module input against the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure a loose clutch position sensor A connector.
- Repair corroded terminals or damaged connector pins.
- Repair or reroute wiring that chafes or vibrates against another component.
- Replace sensor A if its output drops out despite a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the signal loss causes slipping, missed shifts, or unpredictable clutch engagement. An intermittent fault can return without warning and may leave the transmission unable to shift normally.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
