What it means
The clutch position sensor circuit signal is outside the expected range or performance. The code does not identify a particular sensor technology or mounting fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Clutch position sensor A reports clutch position so the transmission control module can manage clutch engagement. P0806 sets when the signal is present but its range or behavior does not match what the module expects; it does not by itself identify the sensor technology or a mounting problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor misalignment after service
- Aged Hall element
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Scan the transmission module and save freeze-frame data, noting sensor A position, commanded clutch position, and related codes.
- Compare sensor A readings with clutch movement through its operating range using a suitable scan tool.
- Inspect sensor A and its mounting for looseness, damage, contamination, or signs of recent service that could affect alignment.
- Check the sensor connector, wiring, supply, and ground for faults that could distort the reading.
- If the installation and circuit check out, test sensor A’s output against the manufacturer’s specification and assess whether it needs calibration or replacement.
Common fixes
- Secure or correctly align clutch position sensor A if it has been disturbed.
- Clean and reseat a loose or contaminated sensor connector.
- Repair wiring or supply and ground faults affecting the sensor reading.
- Replace a sensor that fails its specified range or performance check.
- Complete the required clutch position learn or calibration after repair, if applicable.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if clutch engagement is inconsistent, the transmission slips, or gear changes are harsh or delayed. Continued operation with an unreliable clutch position signal can worsen drivability and may leave the transmission unable to shift normally.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
