OBD-II fault code

P07E8: Transmission Range Control A Circuit/Open

What it means

A fault was detected in the transmission range control A circuit. The code alone does not establish that the vehicle uses a shift-by-wire actuator or that the circuit operates a manual valve.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module monitors the electrical path identified as transmission range control A for an open circuit. P07E8 sets when that circuit appears electrically interrupted, so the module may not receive or deliver the expected range-control signal; the code does not establish a particular actuator design.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open wire to the range actuator
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and range-control A status before clearing the code, then check whether the reported range agrees with the selector.
  2. Inspect the range-control A harness and connectors for a broken wire, corrosion, a loose terminal, or a pin pushed back into the connector.
  3. With the circuit de-energized as directed by the manufacturer's procedure, check continuity through the range-control A wiring to locate an open.
  4. Check connector terminal fit and inspect accessible module or sensor connections for a cracked joint or poor contact.
  5. If wiring continuity and connections are sound, test the named circuit and connected components using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure before condemning a module.

Common fixes

  • Reseat a backed-out terminal and secure the connector.
  • Repair an open or broken range-control A wire.
  • Clean corroded terminals and restore a sound connection.
  • Repair a confirmed cracked solder joint or replace the failed component after circuit testing.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only if the selected range is clear and the transmission shifts predictably; avoid unnecessary trips if it enters limp mode or misses shifts. An open range-control A circuit can leave the transmission with incorrect or limited range information.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
