OBD-II fault code

P07E7: Stuck in Drive

What it means

The transmission control system detected that the vehicle is stuck in Drive or could not leave Drive when requested. The code does not identify a particular failed component.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control system checks whether the reported range changes when the driver requests a range other than Drive. P07E7 sets when the system continues to detect Drive or cannot confirm the requested change; the code does not identify a particular failed part.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid sticking or malfunctioning
  2. Fault in shift actuator or linkage
  3. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  4. Hydraulic pressure or valve body fault
  5. Internal transmission wear or damage

Symptoms

  • Unable to shift out of Drive
  • Transmission or powertrain warning may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare requested and reported ranges on a scan tool when another range is selected.
  2. With the vehicle secured, check whether the selector moves normally and whether its indication matches the range shown by the scan tool.
  3. Inspect accessible selector linkage or actuator parts and their connectors and wiring for binding, damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  4. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, since fluid problems can affect hydraulic range changes.
  5. Use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to check shift-solenoid commands and hydraulic or valve-body operation against specification.
  6. If control and hydraulic checks pass, inspect the transmission for internal wear or damage that may prevent Drive from disengaging.

Common fixes

  • Repair a binding or misadjusted selector linkage, if fitted.
  • Correct low fluid or service degraded fluid according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Clean and secure affected connectors or repair damaged wiring.
  • Replace a shift solenoid or repair a valve-body fault confirmed by testing.
  • Repair confirmed internal transmission wear or damage.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if the transmission cannot leave Drive or select Park or Neutral reliably; keep the vehicle secured with the parking brake. A stuck range can prevent safe stopping or parking, and forcing the selector may worsen damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
