OBD-II fault code

P27E8: Transmission Range Control B Circuit Performance

What it means

The transmission range control B circuit is not performing within the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Transmission range control circuit B provides a signal that helps the module determine or control the selected gear range. The transmission control module sets P27E8 when circuit B's behavior does not match the expected range or response, which can point to a faulty range-control component, wiring, connector, or module input.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in range-control component or circuit
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Control-module fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light
  • Difficulty selecting a range
  • Limited shifting or limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare scan-tool range data with each selector position to identify where circuit B's response becomes inconsistent.
  2. Inspect the circuit B connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, damaged wiring, or intermittent contact.
  3. Move the selector through its positions while monitoring live range data to check whether the circuit B signal is delayed, unstable, or incorrect.
  4. Check circuit continuity and voltage behavior against the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
  5. If wiring and connectors test correctly, test the range-control component and module input using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded circuit B connector.
  • Repair damaged or intermittently connected range-control wiring.
  • Replace the range-control component if its circuit B output fails the specified performance test.
  • Repair the module input only after confirming the range-control component and wiring are working correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the displayed range is incorrect, gear selection is unreliable, or the transmission enters limp mode, since the vehicle may not respond as expected to the selector. If Park or Drive cannot be selected and confirmed safely, stop and arrange towing.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
