OBD-II fault code

P27E9: Transmission Range Control B Circuit Low

What it means

The B-channel actuator of the transmission range control reports a circuit low condition. Gear-selector mechanical engagement cannot be requested as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The transmission range control B actuator moves or enables a mechanical part of the gear-selection system. The transmission control module monitors the B actuator circuit and sets this code when its electrical reading is lower than expected, so the requested engagement may not occur.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal short in actuator coil
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan transmission live data for the commanded range and actuator status to see when the B-channel fault occurs.
  2. Check whether the transmission is in limp mode and note any mismatch between the selected range and the range reported by the module.
  3. Inspect the B actuator connector and wiring for corrosion, damaged insulation, loose pins, or a wire contacting ground.
  4. With the circuit de-energized as directed by the manufacturer, check the B actuator coil for an internal short against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test the B control wire for a short to ground and check connector continuity, following the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose B actuator connector terminals.
  • Repair the B-channel control wire where it is shorted to ground.
  • Replace the B actuator if its coil is internally shorted.
  • Clear the code and verify B-channel operation through the specified transmission checks.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if shifts are missing, slipping, or harsh, or if the transmission is locked in one gear; arrange a safe route for repair because continued operation can worsen transmission damage. If the vehicle still shifts normally, limit driving and avoid heavy loads until the B-channel fault is diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
