What it means
A general transmission performance fault. The transmission controller has detected behaviour outside acceptable bounds (slip, shift quality, ratio error) without a more specific cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission controller compares commanded gear changes with the transmission's actual speed and operating behavior. P271E sets when it detects a broad performance problem, such as excessive slip, an incorrect gear ratio, or shift quality outside acceptable limits, without identifying a specific failed circuit or component.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Worn clutch friction plates
- Hydraulic pressure regulation has drifted
- Degraded transmission fluid
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for other transmission codes first, since a more specific code may identify the cause of the performance fault.
- Check the fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, and look for leaks or signs of contamination.
- Review live input and output speeds, commanded gear, and shift data during a controlled drive to identify when slip or ratio error occurs.
- Inspect transmission wiring and connectors for damage or poor connections if related electrical codes or abnormal readings are present.
- If the fault persists, have hydraulic pressure and internal clutch operation assessed against the manufacturer's diagnostic specifications.
Common fixes
- Correct a low fluid level and repair any leak using the vehicle's specified fluid and procedure.
- Service degraded transmission fluid if the manufacturer's maintenance and diagnostic guidance supports it.
- Repair a confirmed pressure regulation fault in the valve body or its control system.
- Repair or replace worn clutch friction components if testing confirms internal slip.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips while shifts are harsh, delayed, or slipping. Continued driving with significant slip can overheat the fluid and worsen internal transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
