OBD-II fault code

P0776: Pressure Control Solenoid B Performance

What it means

Pressure Control Solenoid B Performance: the component is electrically intact but its response does not match the command. It regulates transmission line pressure; faults cause slipping, harsh, or delayed shifts.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid B adjusts transmission line pressure in response to commands from the TCM. This code sets when the solenoid circuit appears electrically intact but the resulting pressure or shift behavior does not match the command, which can point to a sticking valve or hydraulic problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pressure Control Solenoid B sticking or binding
  2. Contaminated or degraded transmission fluid
  3. Restricted hydraulic passage or valve body
  4. Internal transmission wear or leakage

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and transmission codes to identify the gear, temperature, and operating conditions when solenoid B response went out of range.
  2. Check fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure; degraded or contaminated fluid can make solenoid B stick.
  3. Inspect the transmission case connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or poor contact that could distort the command or feedback.
  4. Compare solenoid B command with pressure, shift, or other relevant live data while operating under the conditions in the freeze frame.
  5. Test solenoid B operation and its hydraulic response using the manufacturer's procedure.
  6. If the solenoid checks out, inspect the valve body passages and transmission for restrictions, leakage, or internal wear.

Common fixes

  • Correct low or degraded transmission fluid and replace the filter if required by the manufacturer's service procedure.
  • Repair connector or wiring faults affecting solenoid B control.
  • Clean or repair a restricted valve body passage or sticking pressure control valve.
  • Replace pressure control solenoid B if it binds or fails its operation test.
  • Repair internal leakage or worn transmission components if testing identifies them.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid towing or hard acceleration if the transmission slips, shudders, or shifts harshly. A continuing pressure-control problem can overheat or wear the clutch packs and may leave the vehicle in limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
