OBD-II fault code

P073C: Stuck in Gear 7

What it means

The transmission control module detected that the transmission remained in seventh gear when another gear was expected. The code does not identify whether the cause is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The TCM uses transmission speed readings to verify that the commanded gear has engaged. P073C sets when seventh gear remains engaged despite a request for a different gear, and the code does not specify whether the failure is in shift control, hydraulics, fluid supply, or internal parts.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid stuck or failed
  2. Valve body fault affecting seventh-gear shifts
  3. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  4. Internal transmission mechanical fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission remains in seventh gear or does not shift as expected
  • Transmission warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded gear, reported gear or ratio, and input and output speeds to establish when seventh gear stays engaged.
  2. Check for other transmission codes that may reveal a shared speed-sensor or solenoid-control issue.
  3. Inspect for leaks and verify transmission-fluid level and condition according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Examine transmission wiring and connectors for chafing, corrosion, loose terminals, or fluid intrusion.
  5. Use scan data to compare commanded solenoid operation with the speed-sensor response, then test the seventh-gear-related solenoid, valve body, and internal components as specified.

Common fixes

  • Top up fluid to the specified level and repair any leak.
  • Repair damaged wiring or loose or corroded terminals in the transmission control circuit.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty shift solenoid.
  • Repair a valve-body fault affecting seventh-gear engagement or release.
  • Repair internal transmission damage identified by further testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving at speeds or in conditions that require strong acceleration or frequent downshifts while the transmission is stuck in seventh gear. Stop if it slips, overheats, or shifts unpredictably, because continued driving can worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
