OBD-II fault code

P072E: Stuck in Gear 3

What it means

The transmission control module detected that the transmission remained in third gear when another gear was expected. The code does not identify whether the cause is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The TCM commands shifts from third gear and checks transmission response against speed and ratio information. P072E sets when third gear remains engaged after another gear is expected, which can result from a shift solenoid, valve-body restriction, low or degraded fluid, or internal transmission trouble.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid stuck or failed
  2. Valve body fault affecting third-gear shifts
  3. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  4. Internal transmission mechanical fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission remains in third gear or does not shift as expected
  • Transmission warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live gear data to verify that third gear was expected to release but remained engaged.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition according to the manufacturer's procedure, and inspect for leaks or overheating.
  3. Review related shift-solenoid, speed-sensor, and gear-ratio codes for clues about whether the issue is electrical or mechanical.
  4. Inspect accessible wiring and connectors for the shift controls and speed sensors for damage, corrosion, or loose contact.
  5. If those checks do not identify the cause, test solenoid and valve-body operation and then internal transmission function to the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid and repair any leak using the specified procedure.
  • Repair a damaged wire or poor connector in the shift-control circuit.
  • Replace a shift solenoid if testing confirms it is stuck or faulty.
  • Repair a confirmed valve-body or internal mechanical fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid fast roads, towing, and hard acceleration while the transmission remains in third gear, as it may limit speed and make acceleration unpredictable. Stop driving if it slips, overheats, or cannot keep pace safely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
