What it means
The transmission control module detected that the transmission remained in second gear when another gear was expected. The code does not identify whether the cause is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The TCM commands the transmission to leave second gear and monitors whether the resulting gear and speed ratio change. P072D sets when second gear remains engaged despite a different gear being expected; possible causes include the shift solenoid, valve body, fluid condition, or internal components.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shift solenoid stuck or failed
- Valve body fault affecting second-gear shifts
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
- Internal transmission mechanical fault
Symptoms
- Transmission remains in second gear or does not shift as expected
- Transmission warning light on
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame data and live gear status to confirm the commanded gear and that the transmission remained in second.
- Check fluid level and condition with the manufacturer's procedure, and look for leaks or overheating.
- Scan for solenoid, speed-sensor, and other gear-ratio codes that may help distinguish a control issue from a shift failure.
- Inspect the second-gear shift-control wiring and connectors for corrosion, loose pins, or damage.
- If fluid and circuit checks are sound, test solenoid and valve-body operation, then check internal components to the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Correct low fluid and repair any leak using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair poor connections or damaged wiring in the shift-control circuit.
- Replace a shift solenoid only when testing confirms it is stuck or failed.
- Repair a confirmed valve-body or internal transmission fault.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the transmission stays in second gear, especially on fast roads or steep hills, because acceleration and engine speed may be poorly matched to traffic. Stop if it slips, overheats, or cannot maintain a safe speed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
