OBD-II fault code

P073D: Unable to Engage Neutral

What it means

The transmission control module detected that neutral could not be engaged when commanded. The code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The TCM commands the transmission into neutral and checks speed and gear-state information to see whether the transmission has released the engaged gear. P073D sets when neutral is requested but not achieved; a range-signal problem, shift-control fault, low fluid, or internal mechanical issue can produce that mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid or valve body fault preventing neutral selection
  2. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  3. Internal clutch or mechanical fault
  4. Transmission range or control circuit fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission does not enter neutral when selected
  • Transmission warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check commanded range alongside the reported range and input and output speeds to confirm the failed neutral command.
  2. Check for related range-sensor, solenoid, or speed-sensor codes that may explain why the TCM did not see neutral.
  3. Inspect the transmission fluid for leaks and check its level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Inspect the range-control linkage or selector mechanism, wiring, and connectors for damage, poor adjustment, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  5. Use scan data and the wiring diagram to test range-sensor signals and shift-solenoid operation, then investigate valve-body or internal faults if the electrical checks pass.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid and repair any leak.
  • Repair or adjust a damaged or misaligned range-control linkage, where applicable.
  • Repair faulty range-sensor wiring or connector terminals.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty shift solenoid or repair the valve body preventing neutral selection.
  • Repair an internal clutch or mechanical fault confirmed by testing.

Can I keep driving?

Do not assume the vehicle is safely in neutral if it does not respond as expected; secure it against movement before getting out or working around it. Avoid driving if gear selection is unreliable, since the transmission may fail to disengage when needed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
