OBD-II fault code

P072F: Stuck in Gear 4

What it means

The transmission control module detected that the transmission remained in fourth gear when another gear was expected. The code does not identify whether the cause is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module (TCM) compares the selected gear with transmission speed signals and shift-control feedback. P072F sets when fourth gear remains engaged or is reported as engaged after the TCM expects a different gear.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid stuck or failed
  2. Valve body fault affecting fourth-gear shifts
  3. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  4. Internal transmission mechanical fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission remains in fourth gear or does not shift as expected
  • Transmission warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for other transmission codes to see when the fourth-gear condition occurred and whether another fault appeared with it.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, since low or degraded fluid can interfere with fourth-gear operation.
  3. Inspect the wiring and connectors for the shift solenoid and transmission speed signals for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or fluid intrusion.
  4. Use a scan tool to compare commanded gear with actual gear and available input and output speed data during the reported operating conditions.
  5. Test the suspected shift solenoid and its circuit against the manufacturer's specification, then assess valve-body operation and internal transmission components if the electrical checks pass.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level or service fluid that is degraded, following the vehicle's requirements.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector contact in the shift-solenoid circuit.
  • Replace a shift solenoid that fails its electrical or functional test.
  • Repair a valve-body fault affecting fourth-gear shifts.
  • Repair internal transmission damage if testing confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission is stuck in fourth or shifts unpredictably, avoid driving in traffic, on steep grades, or at speeds that require normal shifting; arrange prompt diagnosis. Continued operation can worsen transmission damage, especially if fluid is low or the gear is slipping.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
