What it means
The engine-speed input signal to the transmission control module is intermittent. The code alone does not identify whether the interruption is in the signal source, wiring, or connection.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The TCM relies on a steady engine-speed input to manage shifts and torque-converter operation. P0728 sets when that input cuts in and out, pointing to an intermittent signal source, wiring fault, or connector contact problem rather than a consistently absent signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent fault in engine-speed signal wiring or connection
- Intermittent fault in the signal source
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and check live engine-speed readings for dropouts, especially when the symptom occurs.
- Inspect the signal source connector and wiring to the TCM for loose terminals, corrosion, rubbing, or damage that could interrupt the signal intermittently.
- Check for related signal-source or communication codes and note whether other readings drop out at the same time.
- With the vehicle safely stationary, monitor the signal while gently checking accessible connectors and harness sections for a repeatable interruption.
- Test the signal circuit and module power and ground against the manufacturer's specifications if the fault cannot be found visually.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose connector and clean contaminated terminals.
- Repair a wire or terminal that intermittently opens or shorts.
- Repair or replace the signal source if its output drops out during testing.
- Repair an intermittent module power or ground connection if confirmed.
Can I keep driving?
Because the signal can disappear without warning, avoid high-speed trips, towing, and situations where an unexpected shift could be hazardous. If shifting becomes erratic or the vehicle enters limp mode, stop driving when safe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
