OBD-II fault code

P0726: Engine Speed Input Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The engine-speed signal received by the transmission control module is outside its expected range or does not perform as expected. The code does not by itself identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The TCM compares engine-speed information it receives with the range and behavior expected for current operating conditions. P0726 sets when that input is implausible or does not track as expected; it can involve the signal source, wiring, connector contact, or module power and ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty engine speed signal source
  2. Open or short in the signal wiring between modules
  3. Poor connector contact
  4. Low or unstable module power or ground

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame data and live engine-speed readings to identify when the TCM input became implausible and whether the engine module reports a different speed.
  2. Inspect the signal source connector and the wiring path to the TCM for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or heat damage.
  3. Check for related engine-speed, voltage, or communication codes that may explain an out-of-range reading.
  4. Compare the signal at its source and at the TCM using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and test specifications.
  5. Check module power and ground for instability under the conditions recorded in the freeze-frame data.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a poor signal connector contact.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or damaged engine-speed signal wire.
  • Repair unstable power or ground connections to the affected module.
  • Replace the engine-speed signal source only if testing confirms it produces an incorrect signal.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if gear changes are harsh, delayed, or slipping, and avoid towing or hard acceleration because incorrect speed information can lead to poor shift control. If the vehicle enters limp mode or cannot maintain a safe gear, stop driving and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
