OBD-II fault code

P072A: Stuck in Neutral

What it means

The transmission control module detected that the transmission remained in neutral when a different range or gear was expected. The code does not identify whether the cause is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The TCM compares the selected range and commanded gear with transmission response. P072A sets when the transmission remains in neutral even though the TCM expects another range, which may result from range-control, hydraulic, or internal mechanical trouble.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in transmission control or range selection
  2. Hydraulic or internal transmission fault

Symptoms

  • Unable to move in a commanded drive range
  • Transmission warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live range status to confirm what the selector and TCM reported when the transmission stayed in neutral.
  2. With the vehicle secured and brakes applied, verify that the shifter and indicated range agree and inspect the range-selection linkage or cable where fitted.
  3. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, and look for leaks that could affect hydraulic operation.
  4. Scan for range-sensor, solenoid, or communication codes and inspect the related wiring and connectors for damage or poor contact.
  5. If the electrical range signals are correct, test hydraulic pressure and internal engagement using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Adjust or repair a misaligned range-selection linkage or cable.
  • Repair a loose connector or damaged range-control wiring.
  • Correct low fluid and repair any leak according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Repair a confirmed control, hydraulic, or internal transmission fault.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if the vehicle will not engage a commanded drive range; it may fail to move when needed or behave unpredictably. Keep it secured in a safe place and arrange assistance if range engagement cannot be restored.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
