OBD-II fault code

P0725: Engine Speed Input Circuit

What it means

The transmission control module has detected a fault in the engine-speed input circuit. The code does not identify whether the fault is in the signal source, wiring, or receiving module.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module (TCM) uses engine-speed information from the engine control module or another signal source to coordinate gear changes. P0725 sets when the TCM detects a fault in the engine-speed input circuit, but the code does not pinpoint whether the signal source, wiring, or receiving module is at fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in engine-speed signal wiring or connection
  2. Faulty engine-speed signal source

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live engine-speed readings in both modules, if available, to see whether the TCM is receiving a plausible signal.
  2. Inspect the engine-speed signal wiring and connectors between the signal source and TCM for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or damage.
  3. Check for related engine-speed or communication codes that could identify a fault at the signal source or elsewhere on the network.
  4. Test signal-wire continuity and check for shorts or poor connections using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
  5. If the wiring and signal source check out, verify TCM power and ground before considering a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or contaminated engine-speed signal connector.
  • Repair damaged or poorly connected signal wiring.
  • Repair or replace the faulty engine-speed signal source if testing confirms it is not sending a usable signal.
  • Repair a confirmed TCM power, ground, or module fault.

Can I keep driving?

If shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the vehicle enters limp mode, avoid hard acceleration and long trips; unreliable engine-speed input can disrupt shifting and worsen transmission wear. Stop somewhere safe if the vehicle will not shift predictably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
