OBD-II fault code

P0727: Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal

What it means

The transmission control module receives no engine speed signal. Required to coordinate shifts and torque converter lockup with engine state.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The TCM needs engine-speed information to schedule shifts and coordinate torque-converter lockup. P0727 sets when it receives no engine-speed signal, which may be missing at the source or lost through wiring or communication between modules.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Missing or faulty engine-speed signal from the engine control module
  2. Wiring or communication fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live engine-speed values in the engine and transmission modules to confirm whether the signal is absent at one or both.
  2. Look for related engine-speed sensor, module communication, or power-supply codes that could explain the missing input.
  3. Inspect the signal wiring and connectors between modules for disconnection, corrosion, damaged insulation, or backed-out pins.
  4. Test the signal path and network communication according to the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
  5. If the signal reaches the TCM but is not recognized, verify its power and ground and assess the module only after circuit checks.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect, clean, or secure a loose engine-speed signal connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a failed communication connection.
  • Repair a confirmed fault in the engine-speed signal source or its output circuit.
  • Repair a verified module power, ground, or TCM fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid normal driving if the vehicle shifts unpredictably or is locked in one gear; missing engine-speed input can prevent safe, controlled shifts. If it cannot accelerate or keep pace with traffic safely, stop and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
