What it means
A request from the transmission control module (TCM) to illuminate the MIL. P0700 itself carries no specific information — it is a wrapper that tells the engine ECU "the TCM has a code". Read the TCM directly to find the actual transmission DTC.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission control module (TCM) manages gear changes and monitors transmission operation. P0700 is set when the TCM asks the engine control module to turn on the malfunction indicator lamp; it does not identify the transmission fault itself.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- A TCM fault code is stored and needs to be read separately
- TCM or its wiring has a fault
- Low system voltage or poor TCM power or ground
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool that can access the TCM and record its codes and freeze-frame data, because the engine ECU's P0700 alone does not reveal the cause.
- Note whether the warning appeared during a particular shift or operating condition, and check live transmission data for abnormal gear or shift information.
- Inspect the TCM connectors, harness, power feeds, and grounds for looseness, corrosion, damage, or fluid contamination.
- Check battery condition and charging voltage, then verify TCM power and ground against the manufacturer's specification.
- Diagnose the TCM's specific stored codes and confirm the repair clears them and restores normal shifting.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose TCM and battery connections.
- Repair damaged TCM wiring or restore a poor power or ground connection.
- Replace a weak battery or repair a charging-system fault.
- Repair the transmission fault identified by the TCM's own code.
Can I keep driving?
If shifts are normal and no other symptoms are present, drive only as needed to retrieve the TCM codes and arrange diagnosis. Harsh, delayed, slipping, or missing shifts, or a vehicle stuck in one gear, can worsen transmission damage; avoid heavy loads and stop if control becomes unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
