OBD-II fault code

P05A5: Active Grille Air Shutter A Control Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P05A2 with the control line shorted to ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control circuit carries commands to the Active Grille Air Shutter A actuator, which moves the grille shutters for airflow control. This code sets when the control line falls below its plausible range, consistent with a short to ground, and the actuator may leave the shutters fixed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control line shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Active grille shutter warning, if equipped
  • Shutters may remain in one position

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check Shutter A command and position status to see when the low control reading occurs.
  2. Inspect the actuator connector and harness for water, corrosion, pushed-back pins, and insulation rubbed through to ground.
  3. Trace the control wire where it passes near brackets or other grounded metal for pinching or chafing.
  4. Use the vehicle wiring diagram to check for a control-line short to ground and verify terminal fit and circuit continuity.
  5. If wiring is sound, test the actuator and module output according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair the control wire where it is chafed or shorted to ground.
  • Clean and secure corroded or loose Shutter A actuator connector terminals.
  • Replace a damaged connector or seal that is allowing water ingress.
  • Replace the actuator or repair the module only if circuit testing isolates the fault there.

Can I keep driving?

Shutter A may remain fixed, which can affect cooling airflow. Monitor engine temperature and stop safely if it rises into the overheating range.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
