OBD-II fault code

P05A4: Active Grille Air Shutter A Control Circuit High

What it means

Same as P05A2 with the control line shorted to supply. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control circuit supplies commands to the Active Grille Air Shutter A actuator, and the control module monitors the circuit as it operates the shutters. This code sets when the control line reads higher than its plausible range, consistent with a short to a supply source, and the shutters may stop responding.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control line shorted to supply
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Active grille shutter warning, if equipped
  • Shutters may remain in one position

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check Shutter A command and status to see whether the fault occurs during actuator operation.
  2. Inspect the actuator connector and harness for moisture, corrosion, backed-out pins, or insulation rubbed against a power wire.
  3. Trace the control wire for pinching or chafing near battery-positive or other supply wiring.
  4. Using the vehicle wiring diagram, check whether the control line is shorted to supply and inspect terminal condition while the fault is present.
  5. If wiring checks out, test actuator and module circuit behavior according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair the control wire where it is pinched or shorted to a supply wire.
  • Clean and secure corroded or loose Shutter A actuator connector terminals.
  • Replace damaged connector seals or terminals that allow moisture or poor contact.
  • Replace the actuator or repair the module only if wiring tests show the fault originates there.

Can I keep driving?

Shutter A may remain in one position, so watch the engine temperature, particularly in hot weather or under load. Stop safely if the engine overheats.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
