What it means
Same as P059F with the shutter A stuck in the open or active position - typically broken return spring or seized linkage.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Active Grille Air Shutter A regulates airflow through the grille, and its actuator and return mechanism move it between positions. The control module sets this code when Shutter A stays on or open when movement away from that position is expected, which can delay engine warm-up.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Return spring broken
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Active grille shutter warning, if equipped
- Shutters may remain open
- Engine may take longer to warm up
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare commanded with reported Shutter A position to confirm it remains open.
- Inspect the grille for slats or linkage held open by debris, ice, or visible damage.
- Check the return spring and linkage for breakage, looseness, or binding that prevents Shutter A from closing.
- Command shutter movement with a scan tool, if supported, and observe whether the actuator can move Shutter A from open.
- If the mechanism moves freely but remains open, inspect the actuator wiring and test the actuator and position feedback according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Remove debris or ice holding Shutter A open.
- Clean the mechanism so the slats and linkage can move freely.
- Replace a broken return spring or repair worn linkage.
- Replace a faulty actuator if it cannot move the free shutter assembly as commanded.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle can often be driven if engine temperature remains normal, but an open Shutter A may slow warm-up and reduce aerodynamic efficiency. Monitor temperature and have the fault addressed if warm-up or heating is noticeably affected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
