OBD-II fault code

P05B4: Active Grille Air Shutter B Control Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P05A5 on shutter B. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Active grille shutter B is controlled through an electrical circuit that tells its actuator when to move. This code sets when the control module sees that circuit below its expected range, which can happen if the line is shorted to ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control line shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Shutter B may not respond to commands
  • Cooling fan may run more often

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check B's commanded and reported movement with a scan tool, if those data are available.
  2. Inspect shutter B's control wiring for rubbed-through insulation, pinching, or contact with grounded metal.
  3. Check B's connector for corrosion, loose fit, or terminals pushed back in the connector body.
  4. Use the manufacturer's wiring information to test whether the control line is shorted to ground.
  5. If the wiring is intact, test the actuator and module output to locate an internal fault pulling the line low.

Common fixes

  • Repair rubbed-through or pinched control wiring that is touching ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose connector terminals at shutter B.
  • Replace a shutter B actuator confirmed to be pulling its control circuit low.
  • Repair or replace a control module only if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Cautious driving is generally possible if engine temperature stays normal, but shutter B may not respond correctly to cooling demands. Watch the temperature gauge, avoid heavy loads or extended idling, and stop if the engine overheats.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
