OBD-II fault code

P059D: Active Grille Air Shutter A Position Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P059A with the signal voltage below the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Active Grille Air Shutter A is a movable grille assembly, and its position sensor reports how far its shutters have moved. The control module compares that feedback with the expected sensor signal; this code sets when the signal falls below its plausible range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Active grille shutter warning, if equipped
  • Shutters may remain open or closed

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live position feedback for Shutter A to see whether the low signal is constant or changes with shutter commands.
  2. Inspect the Shutter A sensor connector and nearby harness for moisture, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or insulation rubbed through to ground.
  3. With the circuit active, gently move the harness near the sensor and watch live data for a signal change that identifies an intermittent short or poor connection.
  4. Check the sensor signal and reference or ground circuits against the vehicle wiring diagram for a short to ground or excessive resistance.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the position sensor and shutter assembly using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose Shutter A sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair insulation damage where the sensor signal wire is chafed to ground.
  • Repair a pushed-back terminal or damaged connector seal and keep moisture out.
  • Replace the position sensor if its signal remains below range with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

A low position signal can leave the shutters fixed open or closed, so avoid demanding driving if engine temperature rises. Watch the temperature gauge and stop safely if the engine overheats.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
