What it means
Same as P059A with feedback in plausible range yet not matching the commanded angle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The position sensor for active grille shutter A reports how far that shutter has moved. P059B sets when the reported position is within an electrically plausible range but does not track the commanded angle, which can point to a misaligned sensor, binding linkage, or worn mechanism.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty or misaligned grille-shutter position sensor
- Shutter linkage binding or wear
- Damaged or corroded wiring or connector
- Fault in the shutter control module
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Active grille shutter warning, if equipped
- Shutters may move incorrectly or remain in one position
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to compare commanded and reported positions for grille shutter A and review freeze-frame data for when they began to differ.
- Inspect shutter A's sensor mounting, connector, and wiring for misalignment, corrosion, damage, or loose pins.
- Check the A shutter linkage and panels for debris, wear, obstruction, or binding through their movement.
- Command the shutters with a scan tool if supported and watch whether A moves smoothly and its sensor reading follows the command.
- If movement and wiring are sound, test sensor A and the shutter control module against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Remove debris and free a binding grille-shutter A linkage.
- Correct a misaligned sensor or shutter linkage.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals at sensor A.
- Replace a worn shutter mechanism or faulty position sensor after confirming the mismatch.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive if the engine stays at a normal temperature, but monitor the gauge, especially in slow traffic or hot conditions. A shutter stuck closed can reduce cooling airflow.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
