What it means
Active Grille Air Shutter A Position Sensor Circuit: an electrical fault is present in the circuit. Active grille shutters manage airflow for engine cooling and aerodynamics.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Active grille shutter A is one of the movable panels that regulate airflow through the front grille for cooling and aerodynamic control. The module monitors its position-sensor circuit, and P059A sets when that circuit has an electrical fault; the shutters may stay open or closed and a warning may appear.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty grille-shutter position sensor
- Damaged or corroded sensor wiring or connector
- Shutter mechanism or linkage problem
- Fault in the shutter control module
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Active grille shutter warning, if equipped
- Shutters may remain open or closed
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to confirm P059A and compare grille-shutter A position data with commanded position and any related shutter codes.
- Inspect sensor A's connector and wiring at the grille for damage, corrosion, water entry, loose pins, or pinched sections.
- Check the shutter assembly and linkage for debris, damage, or binding that could disturb sensor feedback.
- Using the wiring diagram, test sensor A's power, ground, and signal circuit for opens, shorts, or poor connections.
- If the circuit and linkage are sound, test the position sensor and shutter control module against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Remove debris or correct binding in the grille shutter linkage.
- Repair damaged sensor A wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace a faulty grille-shutter A position sensor if separately serviceable.
- Replace the shutter assembly or control module only after circuit and mechanism checks.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive if engine temperature stays normal, but watch the temperature gauge because shutters stuck closed can restrict cooling. Have the fault checked promptly if a grille-shutter warning appears or cooling is affected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
