What it means
The control line to the idle air control valve - which opens a small bypass around the throttle to set idle airflow - is shorted to ground or measures a voltage below the plausible level.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
On engines with a separate idle air control valve, the module uses its electrical circuit to move the valve and meter bypass air around the throttle. P0508 sets when the IAC circuit signal is lower than expected, which can result from a short to ground, an internally shorted solenoid, or a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- IAC solenoid internally shorted
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Idle speed too high, too low, or unstable
- Possible stalling at idle or after cold start
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and check IAC command and idle RPM in live data to see whether the idle problem coincides with the circuit fault.
- Inspect the IAC valve connector for corrosion, loose pins, moisture, or damage.
- Trace the IAC control wiring for chafing or contact with ground, paying attention to areas near the valve and harness bends.
- With the circuit safely isolated as specified by the service information, check the control line for a short to ground.
- Test IAC solenoid resistance and the control circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose IAC connector terminals.
- Repair a control wire shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
- Replace an IAC valve whose solenoid is internally shorted.
- Repair a poor harness connection causing excessive resistance.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine stalls or cannot hold idle, avoid driving in traffic or at junctions. A stable idle may allow a short drive, but the fault can leave the engine hard to start or prone to stalling.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
