What it means
The idle air control circuit voltage is higher than expected. This indicates an electrical fault in the IAC circuit; the code alone does not identify the specific wiring fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
On engines with a separate idle air control valve, the module drives the IAC circuit to position a valve that meters bypass air around the throttle. P0509 sets when circuit voltage is higher than expected, which can result from a short to supply, an open circuit, or a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to supply
- Open in IAC valve or harness
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Idle speed too high, too low, or unstable
- Possible stalling at idle or after cold start
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and check IAC command and idle RPM in live data to relate the circuit fault to the idle symptoms.
- Inspect the IAC valve connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, broken wires, or damage that could leave the circuit open.
- Trace the control wire for a short to a power feed, especially where the harness passes sharp edges or other wiring.
- Check continuity through the IAC circuit and for unwanted connection to supply with the circuit isolated as service information requires.
- Test the IAC valve and circuit against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish an open solenoid from a wiring fault.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose IAC connector terminals.
- Repair an open or broken IAC control wire.
- Repair wiring shorted to a supply circuit.
- Replace an IAC valve that fails its electrical test.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine stalls or the idle becomes unpredictable, avoid driving in traffic or at junctions. If it runs steadily, a short drive may be possible, but idle control and cold starting can worsen.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
