What it means
During the cold-start phase the ECU runs an elevated idle speed and a richer mixture to bring the catalyst above light-off temperature quickly. The cold-start idle does not behave as commanded - speed sags, hunts, or fails to come up. Possible causes are intake leaks active when cold, an IAC valve sticking, or implausible coolant temperature.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
During a cold start, the engine control module raises idle speed and adjusts airflow to help the catalyst warm quickly. P050A sets when actual idle behaviour does not follow the expected cold-start control, such as when RPM sags or hunts while the engine is still cold.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intake leak only when cold (gasket shrinks)
- IAC valve sticking when cold
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Idle speed unusually high, low, or unstable after a cold start
- Engine may stall shortly after starting
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and note coolant temperature, ambient conditions, and RPM when the code set.
- After an overnight cold soak, compare coolant temperature data with ambient temperature before starting to check for an implausible reading.
- Watch commanded and actual idle speed during the first minutes of a cold start to see when they diverge.
- Inspect cold-sensitive intake hoses, gaskets, and connections for leaks, and check the throttle body or idle-air passage for deposits.
- If equipped with an IAC valve, check whether it responds smoothly to commands and test it against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a leaking intake hose, gasket, or connection.
- Clean deposits from the throttle body or idle-air passage.
- Repair a coolant-temperature sensor circuit fault if readings are implausible.
- Replace an IAC valve that sticks when cold or fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine stalls shortly after a cold start, avoid driving until it can idle reliably, especially in traffic. If it remains running, drive gently while cold and watch for repeated stalling.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
