What it means
The idle air control system is electrically intact, but the actual idle airflow does not match the commanded value - typical for a sticky valve, intake leak, or carbon build-up around the throttle bore.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The idle air control system meters bypass air so the engine can hold its commanded idle with the throttle closed. P0519 sets when the electrical controls are functioning but the resulting idle airflow or speed does not track the module's command, often because the valve sticks or an intake leak changes airflow.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- IAC valve sticking due to carbon
- Intake leak disturbs idle metering
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Idle speed too high, too low, or unstable
- Possible stalling at idle or after cold start
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live commanded versus actual idle speed and IAC position to see whether airflow response lags or exceeds the command.
- Inspect intake hoses, vacuum connections, and the throttle body area for loose fittings or leaks that can raise or destabilize idle.
- Check for carbon or deposits around the IAC valve and throttle bore that could restrict bypass airflow or make the valve stick.
- Use a suitable intake leak test and compare the IAC response with the manufacturer's procedure to separate leakage from a sticking valve.
- If the intake is sealed and clean but actual idle still fails to follow the command, test the IAC valve and its airflow passage.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or replace a leaking intake or vacuum hose.
- Clean carbon from the IAC valve passage and throttle bore using an appropriate procedure.
- Repair a leaking intake gasket or other confirmed vacuum leak.
- Replace a sticking IAC valve if cleaning and airflow checks do not restore commanded idle control.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the engine stalls, races at idle, or cannot hold a predictable idle, since it can lose power during low-speed maneuvers. If it remains stable, drive cautiously and address the fault soon because poor idle control can increase emissions and lead to stalling.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
