OBD-II fault code

P0506: Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected

What it means

The idle speed is lower than the control module expects. Possible causes include restricted idle airflow, an intake leak affecting control, or an idle actuator or throttle control fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module regulates idle speed by controlling airflow through the throttle body or, on equipped engines, an idle air control valve and bypass passage. P0506 sets when engine speed stays below the commanded idle target, often because too little air reaches the engine at idle.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Throttle body or idle bypass passage clogged
  2. IAC valve stuck mostly closed

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Idle speed too high, too low, or unstable
  • Possible stalling at idle or after cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and compare commanded idle speed with actual RPM, noting engine temperature and whether the fault occurs at cold start or when warm.
  2. Check live data for throttle position, idle-air command if available, and RPM while the engine idles with accessories off.
  3. Inspect the throttle body and idle-air bypass passage for deposits or blockage.
  4. Check intake hoses and connections for leaks or restrictions that may upset idle control.
  5. If equipped with an IAC valve, check its connector and movement or command response, then test it against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean deposits from the throttle body and idle-air bypass passage using an appropriate method.
  • Repair a loose or leaking intake hose or connection.
  • Clean and secure the IAC connector.
  • Replace an IAC valve that sticks or fails its test.

Can I keep driving?

Short trips may be possible if the engine idles reliably, but avoid situations where stalling would be hazardous. If it stalls at stops or immediately after starting, do not continue driving until the cause is addressed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
