OBD-II fault code

P0341: Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

What it means

The CMP signal is present but its phase relative to the crankshaft is outside tolerance. On engines with variable valve timing, this code often appears together with VVT solenoid faults.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Camshaft Position Sensor A on bank 1, or the single cam sensor on an engine with one, reports cam timing to the engine control module. This code means the signal is present but its timing or pattern does not match the expected relationship to the crankshaft; variable valve timing problems, chain wear, or a drifting sensor can cause that mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Timing chain stretched
  2. VVT solenoid stuck or oil-starved
  3. Sensor drifting

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live camshaft timing and synchronization readings for Sensor A on bank 1, along with related crankshaft and VVT codes.
  2. Inspect the Sensor A connector and wiring for damage, loose fit, oil contamination, or poor contact.
  3. Check engine oil level and condition, then inspect the bank 1 VVT solenoid and its connector for an obvious fault that could affect cam timing.
  4. Test the Sensor A signal and circuit, and compare commanded with actual bank 1 cam timing using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the electrical and VVT checks pass, check mechanical timing and chain condition against the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct low or unsuitable engine oil if it is contributing to a bank 1 VVT problem.
  • Repair a poor Sensor A connector or damaged wiring.
  • Clean, repair, or replace a bank 1 VVT solenoid that fails testing.
  • Replace Sensor A on bank 1 if it fails the manufacturer's tests.
  • Repair a stretched timing chain or correct mechanical timing if confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine is running smoothly, drive gently and arrange diagnosis soon; avoid hard acceleration because cam timing may be incorrect and fuel use or emissions can increase. Stop if it stalls, runs very roughly, or loses significant power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
