OBD-II fault code

P02C6: Cylinder 12 - Fuel Trim at Max Limit

What it means

The control module has reached the maximum fuel-trim correction for cylinder 12. This indicates a cylinder-specific mixture correction limit; the code alone does not identify the underlying cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Cylinder 12's fuel trim is the module's adjustment to the fuel delivered for that cylinder. The module monitors whether that adjustment can keep the cylinder's mixture within its control range. P02C6 sets when the correction reaches its maximum in the direction of adding fuel, but it does not identify the cause.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Cylinder 12 mixture control requiring maximum correction toward more fuel
  2. Vacuum or intake leak affecting cylinder 12
  3. Restricted or under-delivering cylinder 12 injector
  4. Low fuel pressure or injector-control fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Rough idle or misfire
  • Hesitation or reduced power
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the freeze-frame data and compare cylinder 12's fuel-trim and misfire readings with other cylinders to see when the correction reaches its limit.
  2. Inspect the intake runner, nearby vacuum hoses, and seals serving cylinder 12 for a leak that could admit unmetered air.
  3. Check cylinder 12's injector connector and wiring for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or signs of a driver-control problem.
  4. Compare cylinder 12 injector operation and contribution with other cylinders using suitable scan-tool or injector tests.
  5. Measure fuel pressure and verify cylinder 12 injector delivery against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a local restriction from a broader fuel-supply problem.

Common fixes

  • Repair a vacuum hose, intake leak, or seal affecting cylinder 12.
  • Repair a damaged or poorly connected cylinder 12 injector circuit.
  • Clean or replace a restricted cylinder 12 injector as indicated by testing.
  • Correct low fuel pressure or a fuel-supply restriction.
  • Repair an injector driver fault if circuit testing confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and the check-engine light is steady, limit driving and avoid hard acceleration until diagnosed. If it misfires badly or the light flashes, stop driving when safe; continued misfire can damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
