What it means
Coolant temperature exceeded the safe maximum. Engine overheating event detected — risk of head gasket damage or seizure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The cooling system circulates coolant through the engine and radiator to keep engine temperature within a safe range. The PCM monitors coolant temperature and sets P0217 when it detects an overtemperature event; continued overheating can damage the head gasket or seize the engine.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Thermostat stuck closed
- Low coolant level (leak)
- Water pump failed
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Cooling fan runs constantly or not at all
- Cabin heater weak or excessively hot
- Possible long warm-up time or hard cold start
How to diagnose it
- If the temperature warning is active, stop safely and let the engine cool before opening the cooling system; never remove a hot coolant cap.
- Review freeze-frame data and live coolant-temperature readings to confirm when and how quickly the temperature rose.
- When cool, check the coolant level and inspect the radiator, hoses, and water-pump area for leaks.
- Check whether the cooling fan operates as commanded and inspect its wiring and fuse circuit if it does not.
- Test the thermostat, water pump, and coolant circulation for faults using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Restore the correct coolant level after locating and fixing any leak.
- Repair a failed cooling-fan connection or circuit.
- Replace a thermostat that does not open correctly.
- Replace a failed water pump or repair a confirmed circulation problem.
Can I keep driving?
Do not continue driving while the engine is overheating; pull over safely and switch it off, because further operation can cause severe engine damage. Arrange recovery if the temperature remains high or coolant is leaking.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
