What it means
Fault detected on the engine shutoff solenoid (used on diesels and some petrol engines to stop fuel flow at engine off).
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The engine shutoff solenoid controls fuel flow so the engine can stop when commanded. The PCM monitors the solenoid's control circuit and response; P0215 sets when it detects a fault that may prevent the solenoid from operating as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Engine shutoff solenoid failure
- Damaged wiring or loose connector
- Fault in the solenoid control circuit
- Fuel supply or mechanical issue preventing shutoff
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Engine may be difficult to start or may not start
- Engine may fail to shut off normally
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and any related codes, noting whether the fault occurred during starting or shutdown.
- Inspect the shutoff solenoid connector and nearby wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or damage.
- Check the solenoid control circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Verify that the solenoid receives the commanded control signal and operates as specified by the manufacturer.
- If electrical checks pass, investigate fuel delivery or mechanical issues that could keep the engine running after fuel shutoff.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose shutoff-solenoid connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Clean or repair corroded terminals in the solenoid circuit.
- Replace a shutoff solenoid that fails its electrical or operational test.
- Repair a confirmed fuel-delivery or mechanical fault affecting engine shutdown.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine will not shut off normally, stop in a safe place and follow the vehicle's emergency shutdown guidance; do not continue driving with unreliable engine control. A starting failure can also leave you stranded.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
