What it means
Fault on the injection timing control circuit (used on mechanical injection pumps with electronic timing control).
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
On systems that use an electronically controlled mechanical injection pump, the timing-control circuit operates an actuator that adjusts when fuel is injected. The PCM monitors that circuit and its effect on injection timing; P0216 sets when the circuit or timing control does not respond as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Injection timing control solenoid or actuator failure
- Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
- Injection pump timing-control fault
- Fuel contamination or delivery problem
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Hard starting
- Rough running or reduced power
- Increased exhaust smoke
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and related codes, including engine speed and load when the timing-control fault occurred.
- Inspect the injection timing actuator connector and harness for loose contacts, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
- Test the timing-control circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Check the actuator's electrical operation and commanded response against the manufacturer's specification.
- If wiring and actuator checks pass, assess injection-pump timing control and fuel condition or delivery using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or restore a secure connection at the timing-control actuator.
- Clean or repair corroded control-circuit terminals.
- Replace a timing-control solenoid or actuator that fails testing.
- Correct verified fuel contamination or delivery problems.
- Repair an injection-pump timing-control fault confirmed by testing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy loads and long trips if the engine runs roughly, smokes, or has reduced power, since incorrect injection timing can worsen drivability and emissions. If it enters reduced-power mode or becomes difficult to control, stop somewhere safe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
