OBD-II fault code

P0219: Engine Overspeed Condition

What it means

The ECU recorded an engine speed above the manufacturer's redline limit. Typical causes are missed downshifts, mis-shifts on a manual gearbox, or runaway diesel events. The code is informational but may trigger fuel cut-off and protective derate.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The engine speed sensor provides the ECU with crankshaft-speed information, which it uses to manage engine operation and protect the engine. P0219 records an engine-speed event above the manufacturer's limit; it can follow an actual overspeed, such as a missed shift, or a crankshaft-sensor signal spike.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Missed downshift on manual transmission
  2. Crankshaft sensor signal spike

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light or engine warning light
  • Engine power may be reduced
  • Engine may have shut off briefly or entered a protective mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and recorded engine speed to see whether the event coincided with a gear change, high load, or an implausible reading.
  2. Check for related crankshaft-sensor or misfire codes and compare live engine-speed data with how the engine is actually running.
  3. Inspect the crankshaft-position sensor connector and wiring for looseness, damage, or interference.
  4. Test the crankshaft sensor signal and circuit for dropouts or spikes using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the speed reading is credible, inspect the driving event and transmission or engine controls for a cause of actual overspeed.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or loose crankshaft-sensor wiring and connections.
  • Replace a crankshaft-position sensor that produces an incorrect signal.
  • Correct a confirmed sensor-circuit fault.
  • Address a verified engine or transmission control problem that caused actual overspeed.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid high engine speeds and aggressive downshifts until the cause is understood, especially if power is reduced or the engine has shut off. A true overspeed can damage the engine, while a faulty speed signal can cause unexpected protective intervention.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
