Red lights

High coolant temperature

What it means

This warning means the engine coolant or engine temperature is too high. Red signals a serious overheating warning: stop safely and switch off the engine; the colour and exact behaviour vary by manufacturer.

What the symbol looks like: A thermometer above wavy lines representing coolant.

Why it comes on

  • Low coolant from a leak
  • Cooling fan not operating
  • Thermostat stuck or coolant flow restricted
  • Water pump or drive belt fault
  • Radiator blockage or cooling system fault

What to do

  1. Pull over safely, switch off the engine, and keep clear of hot steam or coolant.
  2. Let the engine cool fully before checking anything under the bonnet.
  3. Check the owner's manual for the coolant reservoir and safe checking procedure; never open a hot pressurised cap.
  4. If coolant is low, leaking, or the warning returns, arrange recovery or professional inspection.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving while the engine is overheating; stop and let it cool. Avoid opening the cooling system while hot or restarting if coolant is leaking or the warning returns.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
