OBD-II fault code

P0213: Cold Start Injector 1 Malfunction

What it means

The PCM detected a malfunction involving cold start injector 1. The code does not establish a flow imbalance or fuel-trim effect.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Cold-start injector 1 supplies extra fuel during cold starting on systems equipped with a separate cold-start injector. The PCM monitors its operation or control circuit, and P0213 sets when it detects a malfunction; the code does not by itself establish a flow imbalance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Cold-start injector failure
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Fuel supply or pressure problem
  4. Control circuit fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Hard starting when the engine is cold
  • Rough running shortly after a cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and note engine temperature at the fault, then check for related cold-start, injector, or fuel-pressure codes.
  2. When the engine is cold, compare starting and injector-related live data with the conditions described in the freeze frame.
  3. Inspect cold-start injector 1's connector and wiring for corrosion, looseness, breaks, or heat damage.
  4. Check fuel supply and pressure under the relevant cold-start conditions against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test the injector 1 control circuit and injector operation using the vehicle's wiring information and manufacturer procedures.
  6. If the injector and circuit pass, investigate the PCM control or other system conditions identified by the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged cold-start injector 1 connector or wire.
  • Correct a verified fuel supply or pressure problem.
  • Replace cold-start injector 1 if it fails the specified operation test.
  • Repair a confirmed control circuit fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle starts and runs normally once warm, short local trips may be possible, but allow extra time for cold starts and arrange diagnosis soon. Avoid repeated prolonged cranking, which can drain the battery and strain the starter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
