What it means
The PCM detected a malfunction involving cold start injector 2. The code does not establish a flow imbalance or fuel-trim effect.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Cold-start injector 2 adds fuel during cold starting on engines equipped with this separate injector. The PCM monitors its electrical control and, depending on the system, its response; it sets P0214 when it detects a fault associated with injector 2, without proving that fuel flow or fuel trims are incorrect.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Cold-start injector failure
- Wiring or connector fault
- Fuel supply or pressure problem
- Control circuit fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Hard starting when the engine is cold
- Rough running shortly after a cold start
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare cold-start and warm-start behavior to confirm when the fault occurs.
- Locate cold-start injector 2 using vehicle service information, then inspect its connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or fuel leakage.
- Check injector 2's control-circuit wiring and connector continuity or shorts using the manufacturer's test procedure.
- Test injector 2's electrical operation and control signal against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit and injector pass, check fuel supply and pressure during a cold start against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair damaged wiring at cold-start injector 2.
- Clean or repair corroded injector 2 connector terminals.
- Replace a failed cold-start injector 2.
- Repair a verified fuel supply or control-circuit fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine starts and runs smoothly once warm, a short trip may be possible, but allow extra time for cold starts and avoid relying on the vehicle in situations where it must start reliably. Persistent hard starting or rough running can leave you stranded and may increase emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
