OBD-II fault code

P0172: System Too Rich (Bank 1)

What it means

Long-term fuel trim on bank 1 is at the lower limit — the ECU is removing fuel from baseline but mixture remains too rich. Indicates excess fuel delivery, restricted air flow, or a faulty oxygen sensor reporting falsely lean.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module uses oxygen sensor feedback to adjust fuel delivery and identifies Bank 1 as the side containing cylinder 1. P0172 sets when Bank 1 remains too rich even though the module has reduced fuel as far as its correction limit allows.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel pressure regulator stuck closed
  2. Leaking fuel injector
  3. Severely blocked air filter
  4. Oxygen sensor reporting incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration
  • Smell of unburned fuel, fouled spark plugs

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and Bank 1 fuel trims to confirm that the module is removing fuel, and note whether the rich correction appears at idle or under load.
  2. Inspect the air filter and intake duct for severe restriction that could reduce airflow into the engine.
  3. Check fuel pressure and regulator operation against the manufacturer's specification for excessive delivery pressure.
  4. Check Bank 1 injectors for leakage and inspect the purge valve for unwanted fuel vapor flow into the intake.
  5. Compare Bank 1 oxygen sensor readings with other available engine data and inspect sensor wiring before concluding that the sensor is falsely reporting lean.

Common fixes

  • Replace a severely restricted air filter.
  • Repair a purge valve that allows excess vapor into the intake.
  • Repair or replace a fuel pressure regulator that is keeping pressure too high.
  • Replace a leaking Bank 1 injector confirmed by testing.
  • Repair wiring or replace a faulty oxygen sensor only if its signal fails verification.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if black smoke, strong fuel odor, rough running, or a flashing check engine light is present; excess fuel can foul spark plugs and damage the catalytic converter. With mild symptoms, drive gently and have the rich condition diagnosed soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
