What it means
This malfunction indicator means the engine or emissions control system has detected a fault. Amber usually signals that the car needs checking soon; the light’s colour and exact behaviour vary by manufacturer, and some vehicles use yellow instead of amber.
What the symbol looks like: An engine outline, often with a small jagged line inside.
Why it comes on
- Loose or damaged fuel cap or fuel filler seal
- Faulty oxygen sensor or air-fuel sensor
- Misfire from a spark plug, ignition coil, or fuel problem
- Air leak or faulty airflow sensor
- Catalytic converter or emissions control fault
What to do
- Check the owner's manual for the light's meaning and any related messages.
- If the light is flashing, the engine runs roughly, or power drops, stop safely and follow the flashing-light steps.
- If the light is steady and the car feels normal, check that the fuel cap is secure if your vehicle has one.
- Arrange a diagnostic scan and repair soon; record any stored fault codes.
Can I keep driving?
If it is steady and the car feels normal, a short, gentle drive to a repairer is often possible. Avoid hard acceleration and long trips; stop if it flashes, the engine overheats, loses power, or runs roughly.
Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
