What it means
The ECU detects that short-term and long-term fuel trim values on bank 1 are outside acceptable limits. Engine cannot maintain stoichiometric mixture — typically a vacuum leak, fuel pressure issue, or failing MAF/O2 sensor.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The engine control module uses oxygen sensor feedback to adjust fuel delivery and tracks fuel trims for Bank 1, the side of the engine containing cylinder 1. P0170 sets when Bank 1 fuel trim corrections fall outside the module's acceptable range, indicating that it cannot maintain the intended mixture normally.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Vacuum leak (intake gasket, hose, PCV)
- Fuel pressure too low or too high
- MAF sensor reading drifted
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough or unstable idle
- Hesitation or reduced power
- Poor fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and Bank 1 short- and long-term fuel trims at idle and raised engine speed to see whether correction changes with airflow.
- Inspect Bank 1 intake hoses, PCV connections, and intake gasket areas for vacuum leaks that can skew fuel trim.
- Check the mass air flow sensor, air filter, and intake duct for contamination, restriction, or leaks that affect measured airflow.
- Measure fuel pressure against the manufacturer's specification if Bank 1 trims indicate a fuel delivery problem.
- Compare Bank 1 oxygen sensor activity with fuel trims and inspect its wiring before deciding whether the sensor is faulty.
Common fixes
- Repair a vacuum leak at an intake hose, PCV line, or gasket.
- Replace a restricted air filter or clean a contaminated mass air flow sensor appropriately.
- Repair a fuel pressure problem confirmed by testing.
- Repair Bank 1 sensor wiring or replace a faulty oxygen sensor only after verifying its signal.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, a short, gentle drive is generally reasonable, but avoid hard acceleration if it hesitates or lacks power. Poor fueling can increase emissions and fuel use, and severe rough running can lead to stalling.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
